WHY URU 40

High-temperature SAW identification for large industrial equipment and ladles

Uru 40 is a passive SAW RFID tag for large industrial equipment, steel ladles and hot-metal ladles that need reliable identity in demanding conditions. Select its robust construction when the thermal duty and service requirements justify dedicated SAW hardware.

Up to 350°CRated operation at the tag position
300°CReading demonstrated in the test video
About 6 mSteelworks reference read distance
Up to 20 mFavourable open-condition reference
SAW COMPATIBILITY

Specify the tag and reader together

Crepak SAW uses a proprietary air-interface protocol, separate from RAIN RFID (EPC Gen2 / ISO/IEC 18000-63). Use Crepak SAW tags with compatible Crepak SAW readers and the selected antenna configuration. A standard RAIN reader cannot read this tag.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE

Read the tag while it is hot

SAW converts the reader signal into a surface acoustic wave on a piezoelectric element. Its patterned response carries the identifier back to the reader without a battery or conventional RFID memory IC. Suitable materials, connections and packaging also determine heat tolerance.
Uru 40 is rated for operation up to 350°C at its mounting position. The published demonstration shows reading at 300°C. Check the complete installed thermal cycle; neither figure refers to the molten steel temperature.

PRIMARY APPLICATIONS

Large equipment and ladle identification

Steel and hot-metal ladles

Capture ladle identity at defined read points and associate movement, process and maintenance events in the host system. Review the field installations and operating videos.

Large industrial equipment

Evaluate Uru 40 where heat exposure, difficult access and long service requirements make frequent tag replacement undesirable. Qualify the actual asset, mounting position and read zone.

VALIDATION EVIDENCE

Review hot-state reading and target selection

Reading at 300°C

This demonstration shows hot-state identification at 300°C. It is separate from the product rating of up to 350°C.

Selective reading with adjacent tags

Review the demonstrated target selection. Validate spacing, antenna orientation, movement and target-absent behaviour in your own application.

Optimus F110SAW reader

Dedicated SAW reading with documented RS-485 / Modbus integration. The optional dual-function version adds separate conventional UHF capability; it does not make the tag protocols interchangeable.

APPLICATION-SPECIFIC SAW RFID TAGS

Need a different SAW tag configuration?

For applications that do not need Uru 40’s heavy-duty construction, Crepak can evaluate other tag designs using the same core SAW component. Packaging, temperature capability, antenna design, size and mounting can be matched to the application to reduce cost and improve project ROI.
These designs are developed around project requirements. Because SAW production volumes are smaller, even cost-optimised versions remain more expensive than conventional RAIN RFID tags. Evaluate tag quantities, dedicated Crepak readers and development costs together to determine whether SAW delivers sufficient value.

Cost and application fit: Application-specific SAW designs can reduce cost relative to high-specification SAW tags. Smaller production volumes mean they generally remain more expensive than conventional RAIN RFID tags. Evaluate dedicated readers and development costs as part of the system ROI.
